What is Rum Punch?
Rum punch is a popular Caribbean cocktail made with rum, fruit juice, and a sweetener such as sugar or syrup. The classic recipe typically includes rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and lime juice, along with simple syrup and sometimes grenadine.
Sometimes people call rum punch, jungle juice, which has its own issues. Newer versions of rum punches tend to add cranberry juice for color, but honestly is there anything less tropical than cranberries from New England?
This cocktail is also often confused with a rum runner but they are not the same. Rum runner cocktails contain banana and blackberry liqueur.
📖Why This Recipe Works
My version of an easy rum punch recipe relies on a combination of tropical flavors including pineapple, guava, and passionfruit to create a balanced and delicious flavor that pairs perfectly with Bacardi White Rum.
Unlike other recipes, there is no need to add red grenadine syrup (except for color) or another type of sugar syrup to this recipe.
🧾Rum Punch Ingredients
Bacardi White Rum - This is a Puerto Rican rum that is a favorite because of how delicious it tastes in cocktails. This recipe works with any white rum, so if you can’t find Bacardi Superior Rum, use another good-quality rum in its place. You can also use coconut rum if you enjoy the flavor. I do not recommend the Bacardi Black Rum (or other dark rum) in this recipe, the flavor is too strong with the light fruit flavors I see.
Pineapple Juice - There’s nothing like fresh pineapple juice, so use it if you can find it.
Guava Juice - Guava juice is generally found in the Mexican aisle of your grocery store. Conveniently it is often sold in small cans. And is often labeled guava nectar. If you can't find it, you can substitute it with mango nectar.
Passionfruit Juice - This juice is both sweet and tart, so it provides complexity to the cocktail.
Fresh Lime Juice - Freshly squeezed lime juice is the best option, but bottled lime juice will work as well. It gives the perfect amount of pucker to this cocktail!
Red Grenadine - This is optional and can be omitted if you prefer. It provides a bright red color but you don't need to add it for sweetness. Both the guava and passionfruit juices will already have sugar added.
Pineapple Wedges, Orange Slices, Marschino Cherries, Lime Wedges, and Fresh Mint - These are for the garnish and are optional, but they add a beautiful touch to the cocktail.

⏲️How to Make Rum Punch
Making this easy punch cocktail recipe is as simple as one, two, three. Just pour, stir, and sip! Here’s what you do:
TO MAKE A PITCHER:
Combine all the ingredients in a large pitcher or punch bowl and stir everything together with a wooden spoon. Top the pitcher off with ice and garnish with chunks of fruit and sprigs of mint. When serving rum cocktails for a crowd I like to freeze some of the garnishes in ice cubes for a pretty presentation. Serve, and enjoy!
TO MAKE A SINGLE GLASS:
Combine all ingredients, except the grenadine, in a cocktail shaker. Fill it with ice and shake for 15 seconds or until the shaker feels ice cold.
Fill a glass with ice and pour the cocktail overtop. Garnish with fruit wedges and mint. Sip, and enjoy!
If the cocktail is too strong for your liking you can always add a little soda water.
💭 Mocktail Variation
If you want to make a non-alcoholic version, add some sparkling water or sugar-free ginger ale instead of the rum.
Or you could just make this homemade blackberry lemonade recipe.
👩🏻🍳 Expert Tip
If you want to make this punch ahead of time, you can! Just don’t add the ice until you’re ready to serve it, and keep it covered in the refrigerator. Add the ice and your fresh garnish, and you’re good to go.
🌡️Storing
How to Store Rum
Rum is best stored in a cool place. Like all alcohol, it shouldn’t be exposed to sunlight and heat, since this can destroy its flavor and smell, making your drinks taste ‘off,’ and kind of funky. Store the bottle upright so the cork isn’t unnecessarily exposed to the rum, and make sure the bottle is sealed tightly.
How to store Bacardi Rum Cocktail:
You can store any leftovers in the fridge, but I recommend removing any unmelted ice beforehand, as it will melt in the fridge and water down the cocktail.
If your punch tastes a bit flat tomorrow and needs a pick-me-up, you can add a bit more fruit juice or a splash of Sprite or ginger ale to give it a bit of life.
