If you've never cooked with broccolini before, you're missing out. Broccolini is a hybrid of broccoli and Chinese broccoli.
No matter how you cook it, it retains a lovely crunch. It can be sautéed with lemon and garlic or grilled with tomato butter.
📖Why My Recipe Works
My version of stir-fried broccolini uses chili garlic sauce instead of the usual oyster sauce, giving it a bold umami flavor and spicy kick that complements the flavors of tamari and honey.
🧾Ingredient Notes
- Broccolini- AKA baby broccoli. Use fresh broccolini or slice regular broccoli florets into small pieces.
- Oil- I like to cook broccolini in a mixture of neutral high-heat oil like avocado or vegetable oil with toasted sesame oil. This gives it a lot of flavor right away.
Stir Fry Sauce:
- Soy Sauce- I used tamari to make this recipe gluten-free, but you can also use regular soy sauce.
- Garlic Chili Sauce- Adds a garlicky flavor and a slight heat to the dish that goes well with the soy sauce and honey.
- Ginger Paste- You can substitute each tablespoon of ginger paste with 1 inch of fresh ginger or 1 tablespoon of minced ginger.
- Honey- Substitute with a tablespoon of brown sugar.
- Rice Vinegar- Adds a mild acidity that helps balance the flavors.
- Chicken Stock- Use vegetable stock to make it vegetarian.
- Cornstarch- Arrowroot or tapioca starch will also work great.
⏲️How to Make Stir-Fried Broccolini
Cut the broccolini into uniform pieces for even cooking.
Whisk the sauce ingredients together in a bowl until the cornstarch is completely dissolved. This will help to thicken the sauce.
Heat the oils over medium-high heat until it shimmers, but do not let it smoke.
Smoking oil can burn the broccolini and give it a bitter flavor. Stir fry the broccolini for 2-3 minutes before adding the sauce.
Let the broccolini simmer until the sauce thickens, making sure it's fully coated in the sauce. The broccolini should be bright green and fork-tender but still slightly crisp. Serve immediately while hot!
🥗What to Serve with Stir-Fried Broccolini
Stir-fried broccolini is delicious when served over sushi rice with miso mushrooms, or spicy miso noodles. You can also add it to my homemade GF ramen recipe.
You can add proteins like chicken, beef, tofu, or shrimp to make it a filling meal on its own. I like to serve it as a side to my shrimp and chicken fried rice, Vietnamese grilled pork, and salt and pepper shrimp.
Expert Tips
- Thoroughly dry the broccolini after washing. You can drain the broccolini in a colander for a few minutes or completely dry with a towel. Excess water can cause the oil to splatter, especially at high heat.
- Use high heat for stir-frying to keep the broccolini crisp.
- Measure out all your ingredients before starting, this recipe comes together quickly.
