    🧾Ingredients

Just three ingredients are needed for this easy honey mustard recipe! With so few ingredients it is important to use high-quality items.

    • Brown mustard
    • Mayonnaise
    • Raw honey

Check the ingredient label on your mayo. If you don't see lemon juice as an ingredient we recommend adding a squeeze of lemon juice. It really does make a difference!

    📋 The Best Mustard

The key to any honey mustard sauce is of course the mustard. With so many options it can be hard to know where to start. What is the best mustard to use when making honey mustard?

Brown stadium-style mustard is the best for honey mustard sauces. It has a complex but not overwhelming flavor and smooth consistency for easy blending.

Our overall favorite brand was Cleveland's Authentic Stadium Mustard. If you can't this in your area Gulden's Brown Mustard was a close second.

After trying multiple mustards we feel pretty strongly about this. But in case you are wondering here is how the competition broke down.

    mustard types on spoons
    • Yellow Mustard- The watery consistency made it a tad too thin and the vinegar taste was too strong.
    • Dijon Mustard- This was our runner up. It has a good, but less complex flavor.
    • Stadium Mustard- Our clear winner.
    • Grainy or Country Style- The texture was a bit off for dipping. We like to reserve grainy mustards for salad dressings.

We do not recommend using dried mustards in this, of any other honey mustard dip recipe.

    ⏲️Instructions

This recipe for homemade honey mustard could not be easier. Simply mix all your ingredients in a small bowl until well combined. There is no need for a food processor or blender. A whisk or spoon and a small bowl are sufficient.

You can make your honey mustard sauce in advance. Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 10 days.

    💭 Variations

    Garlic Honey Mustard

Garlic honey mustard sauce can be made two ways. The first is by substituting the honey with fermented garlic honey  While this is our favorite version, a much easier way is to add 2 cloves of smashed roasted garlic.

Raw garlic is not recommended for this recipe, it is too sharp and competes with the mustard flavors.

    Spicy Honey Mustard

Again, a hot honey mustard sauce can be achieved through one or two methods. First, you can substitute the honey with hot honey Or, my preferred method is to simply add ¼ teaspoon of dried cayenne pepper.

While adding hot sauce to the recipe can be tempting the results ranged from wonderful or downright horrendous. It really depended on the mustard and the hot sauce combo. I find the gentle heat of cayenne pepper to always be a winner. You can scale back or up the pepper for your desired heat level.
