If you're making a classic old-fashioned cocktail, the best simple syrup would be a rich demerara simple syrup. This helps to enhance the overall depth of flavor in the cocktail and trust me, it's delicious!
However, if you can't get your hands on demerara sugar, you can use a standard simple syrup or a brown sugar syrup instead.

Demerara Syrup Old Fashioned
Ingredients
- 2 ounces bourbon whiskey or rye
- 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
- ¼ ounce rich demerara syrup
- 1 orange twist for garnish
Demerara Syrup
- ½ cup demerara sugar
- ½ cup water
Instructions
- In a glass (or cocktail shaker) stir together the whiskey, syrup, and Angostura bitters.2 ounces bourbon, 2 dashes of Angostura bitters, ¼ ounce rich demerara syrup, 1 orange twist
- Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube, and garnish with an orange peel twist.
Demerara Syrup
- Add the sugar and water to a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Do not bring the water to a boil. Cool before using.½ cup demerara sugar, ½ cup water
