Blueberry simple syrup is a great way to jazz up basic cocktails, lemonade, and even iced tea. My recipe for blueberry drink syrup is both quick and easy to make, offering the flexibility to use either fresh or frozen blueberries.

I use this syrup in my blueberry mimosas, blueberry margarita recipe, blueberry old-fashioned, and my blueberry lemon drop martini.
But the versatility makes it a perfect choice for my own blueberry iced tea recipe or try substituting the blackberry syrup in blackberry lemonade.
My demerara syrup recipe is the most popular with readers but this blueberry simple syrup recipe stands out as my favorite.
🧾Ingredient Notes
- Water- I prefer filtered water due to its cleaner taste, negating the need for bottled water, unless dealing with strongly flavored well water.
- Fresh Lemon- Incorporating lemon is optional but recommended, as it adds a brightness that complements the blueberries.
- Berries- Should you opt for fresh blueberries, ensure they are thawed prior to use.
- Sugar- When it comes to sweeteners, the choice between white sugar and coconut sugar is left to personal preference.
While using cheesecloth is optional, I find it invaluable for straining out the tiny bits of blueberry, ensuring a smoother syrup.
⏲️ How to Make Blueberry Simple Syrup
Add all the ingredients in a small saucepan, then lightly mash to increase the blueberry flavor.
After bringing the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally, it is then simmered on low heat for 15 minutes before being removed from the heat.
Using an immersion blender, blend the sauce for 60 seconds to break down any remaining blueberry chunks.
Strain the syrup through a cheesecloth-lined strainer is the next step, pressing the blueberries to extract as much liquid as possible.
The cheesecloth can be twisted into a ball to squeeze out the juice. It's important to allow the syrup to cool before use.
The homemade syrup will be thicker than traditional simple syrup. Cool before using.
How to Use Blueberry Syrup in Drinks
Now that you have made a blueberry simple syrup you can use it just as you would any plain simple syrup. Add it to a vodka margarita, jazz up a mezcal mule, or try it in a mocktail. You can swap it for any syrup to make an Italian soda (aka a blueberry spritzer).
You can also drizzle it on ice cream or yogurt.
Expert Tip
No immersion blender? Move to a regular blender or food processor.
🌡️Storing Leftovers
Store the homemade syrup in an airtight container in the fridge. Fruit simple syrups up can last up to two weeks, though I've found this one typically lasts between 7 to 10 days.
To store for longer, I like to add the syrup to ice cube trays. Once frozen move to a zip-top freezer bag.
